Microsoft looks to hire 1,000 new employees in China

Microsoft will go on a hiring spree in China, the company's chief in that country said today.

Speaking to reporters, Microsoft's Greater China chief, Ralph Haupter, said his company plans to hire 1,000 new workers in China across research and development; marketing and services; and sales. Microsoft currently employs about 4,500 people across China.

Reuters, which was in attendance at the announcement, was first to report the news.

China has become a key component in nearly every technology company's plans for the coming years. And why not? The country's consumer market is booming as an increasing number of people generate more income and thus have more cash to spend on goods.

Microsoft, Apple, Google, and nearly every other major technology company has tagged China as a central component in its product strategies in the coming years.

Microsoft didn't say when it might start hiring its new employees.

Manning no longer in the shadow of big brother

(AP) ? Eli Manning is no longer living in the shadow of his big brother. Far from it.

The New York Giants quarterback enters the kickoff to the NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday night as a two-time Super Bowl MVP. He's now unquestionably among the league's elite after leading Tom Coughlin's team to two titles in five seasons, and a third title is a distinct possibility with the 31-year-old seemingly getting better coming off a career season.

What's even more impressive is Eli is still Eli. He's hard-working, laid-back and looking for nothing more than doing it better than the year before.

"Each year you try to improve and get better," Manning said during training camp. "There's definitely room for improvement. There's no question about it. Most of the things I'm working on are: decision making, eliminating turnovers, and being more accurate. Just continuing to try and work on my skills. Making sure you don't have any missed opportunities. That when guys are open, I'm hitting them."

Former Giants center Shaun O'Hara said most people don't realize how hard Manning works. He usually is one of the first players at the team's headquarters in the morning and stays as long as anyone.

"What adheres everyone to Eli is the way he approaches the game," O'Hara said Monday. "His confidence is never shaken. He knows his own abilities and his own limits. He comes to work every day and puts in the time. He never says, 'I got it. I don't need to work on that.'"

O'Hara said Manning doesn't take much time off. In February and March, when most of his teammates are vacationing, Manning comes to the office and watches every snap from the previous season, O'Hara said, adding the work ethic rubs off on everyone.

"That's one of the best qualities of a leader, to lead by example and to bring people together to accomplish the same goal," O'Hara said. "That's what Eli has done and has had fun doing it. He's not a screamer and yeller. He comes in here and has fun and let's guys make fun of him. He's approachable and doesn't put himself above anybody."

O'Hara cracked up a couple of people when during his retirement speech on Monday, he joked how Manning made him change his football pants each half because they were too sweaty.

One of the major reasons the Giants missed the playoffs in 2010 despite a 10-6 record was that Manning threw 25 interceptions. He worked on ball security in the offseason and finished 2011 with 29 touchdowns and only 16 interceptions in a year in which he threw a career-high 589 passes.

Coughlin said Manning has all the intangibles a coach wants in his quarterback.

"You name it. He's intelligent and he's got great pride," Coughlin said. "He has a burning desire to be the best that he can possibly be. He has great timing. He has the ability to understand exactly what you want to do and what the defense is doing. He'll talk to you about it and get the ball into the right receiver. He does a great job in the classroom. He does a great job representing the Giants. He has outstanding character. He has outstanding leadership. People listen to what he says."

Former Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett, who signed with the Giants in the offseason, has spent the past six months trying to get on the same page with Manning. When the quarterback is eating lunch, Bennett pulls up a chair.

In the preseason finale against the Patriots, Manning and Bennett weren't on the same page on a third-down pass. Manning threw a deep seam and Bennett cut off his pattern.

Seconds after the pass hit the ground, Manning was standing in front of Bennett discussing the play.

"It won't happen again," Bennett said.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, a former quarterback, said Manning is a major reason why the Giants have had success.

"He's an outstanding pocket passer; he can move around and make plays on the move," Garrett said. "He's a very smart player. He can make any throw that you need to make on the football field. He clearly makes his teammates better, makes his team better."

While not the buffest of players, Manning is as tough as they come. He has started the last 130 games for the Giants, a run that dates to his rookie season in 2004. He has led New York to five playoff berths and three division titles in his seven full seasons as a starter.

"We know we have to improve," Manning said. "We were 9-7 last year in the regular season and that's not good enough. We're a better team than that, and we obviously showed that throughout the playoffs. We've got to have that urgency and consistency throughout the whole season, play our best football through 16 regular-season games."

Aiming to Grow Its Business User Base, Hootsuite Acquires Seesmic ...

HootSuite, the company behind the business-oriented social media management service, just announced that it has acquired Seesmic, the company perhaps better known for its colorful French founder, Lo?c Le Meur, than for its often-changing stable of social media tools.

Financial terms aren?t being disclosed, but the deal appears to be more about Seesmic?s user base than its products. In a blog post HootSuite says it will continue to support Seesmic, while transitioning its business users to HootSuite?s services. HootSuite has three tiers of service, including an industrial-strength enterprise tier. It has about five million users around the world, who send about 1.5 million messages a day to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+, among others. Its customers include McDonald?s, PepsiCo and Sony Music.

Seesmic, if I remember correctly, started out as sort of a video-blogging service back in 2007. In 2009, it shifted away from video and toward Twitter. It created a social media dashboard that?s very much like Twitter?s Tweetdeck, and then expanded into a series of social media apps for mobile devices. In early 2010, it acquired Ping.fm, and turned that service into Seesmic Ping, a mobile app for posting and scheduling messages to a myriad of social media networks.

Le Meur has always been a bit of a colorful character on Twitter and all the other social networks. ?I have always had a lot of respect for Seesmic?s CEO, Lo?c Le Meur and the role Seesmic has played in advancing social business,? HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes said in a statement.

However, Seesmic had showed signs of stagnating recently. In March, it laid off about half its staff. At the time, Seesmic had been aiming to build some enterprise-grade social media tools, and had gotten a $4 million funding boost from Salesforce.com and SoftBank to do just that. TechCrunch reported yesterday that the companies were close to announcing a deal.

Mayor Callahan: President Obama needs PA to win

It's time to roll out Plan B in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

It's time to roll out Plan B in Charlotte.

The threat of bad weather is prompting a major change at the Democratic National Convention.

President Obama was supposed to accept his party's nomination tomorrow in an outdoor stadium, just like he did in Denver 4 years ago, but now convention planners are moving everything inside.

That means the speech will be going from a stadium that seats 74,000 to an arena with only 21,000 seats so a lot of the folks in Charlotte who were expecting to be at that speech will have to watch it on TV.

It doesn't change Pennsylvania's seats whose delegates will at least be dry.

"There is no path to President Obama winning without Pennsylvania," said Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan.

Mayor Callahan calls the Lehigh Valley the swing area of the swing state.

"We've got a decent lead right now, Democrats and the President in Pennsylvania. I have no doubt that it's going to tighten as time goes on which is going to make our efforts in the Lehigh Valley even more important," he said.

One of those efforts, Callahan says, is reaching out to those affected by the new Voter ID law.

Will Crossley, the Director of DNC voter protection, met with Pennsylvania delegates Wednesday morning.

"Well I think at this point its the law of the land unless something happens at the supreme court level in Pennsylvania.

He says he's been in touch with election officials in both Lehigh and Northampton Counties to reach as many voters as possible.

"I think we have to deal with it as it comes and do everything that we can to make sure that people have the proper identification," said Callahan.

Mayors are high on the priority list here at the DNC.?

What is Retargeting?

Last updated 23 hours ago

Are you tired of display advertising that targets everyone instead of those just interested in your products or service? Are you tired of having to pay the increasing pay per click prices to be visible when searchers are looking for you?

If so, then retargeting is the perfect online marketing medium for you!

Retargeting allows you to target consumers interested in your business through online display advertising. And, instead of targeting the masses (like traditional media like billboards, television and radio as well as online awareness display campaigns), with retargeting?you will ONLY target people who have explicitly indicated through a search that they are in need of what you do or by visiting your website directly.

There are 2 forms of retargeting:

  1. Search Retargeting
  2. Site Retargeting

SERACH RETARGETING

Search retargeting allows you to retarget searchers who have not been to your website but who have searched for the products or services you offer. As a result, search retargeting?delivers your ad in front of qualified prospects as opposed to the general masses, most of which are not in the market for your products/services.?

?

SITE RETARGETING

Visitors to your website receive a cookie dropped on their browser which then prompt retargeted ads to display on other websites as that visitors surfs the Internet. As a result, you retarget consumers who visited your website but perhaps didn't turn into a qualified lead the first time they were on your website. It's a great way to create top of mind awareness and be there when that interested consumer is ready to make the final buying decision.

?

BENEFITS OF SEARCH & SITE RETARGETING

  • Actionable marketing (meaning qualified consumers can click on the display ad directly and be taken to your website)
  • Top-of-mind awareness
  • Increased opportunity to convert
  • No wasted money on consumers not interested in your products/services
  • Efficient and effective use of your marketing budget
  • Better ROI than traditional forms of branding

ReachLocal has announced the availability of ReachRetargeting?, an innovative online advertising solution that builds brand awareness with interested consumers by showing them a banner ad as they surf the Web. At ReachLocal, we've combined both forms of retargeting to create a cost-efficient, effective and powerful marketing product for your business.
