Growing pressure from Catholic leaders helped sway Susan G. Komen for the Cure?s decision earlier this year to pull grants to Planned Parenthood, Reuters reports, citing internal documents from the breast-cancer charity.
In the mid-2000s, U.S. bishops began speaking out against Komen and urging parishioners not to contribute to the charity because of its ties to Planned Parenthood. The campaign reached news heights last year when Ohio?s 11 dioceses approved a statewide ban on giving to Komen by churches and parochial schools.
Current and former Komen officials said the church opposition was a factor in the decision by the charity?s leaders late last year to suspend grants to Planned Parenthood clinics for cancer screenings. Komen rescinded the ban in February after an outcry over the new policy.
The Komen foundation charity had been giving $500,000 to $700,000 a year to Planned Parenthood. It has also donate $17.6-million in recent years to Catholic universities, hospitals, and charities.
