Camping is one of the funnest outdoor adventures that you can experience in life. It is one of the funnest things that life has to offer you, that is why you are going to want to make sure you get the most out of camping. You can do that by reading this article here.Try to get to the campsite well before nightfall. This allows you to get a feel for the lay of the land and gives you the opportunity to set up camp while you can still see what you are doing. In addition, it lets your children feel a little more comfortable with their surroundings because they will have time to explore.
Do your research on the area you are camping in. If camping at a campground, you are going to want to know where the designated bathrooms and running water is. You should also get to know where the trails, beaches and other activities you will enjoy are for the best experience.
Save any cardboard boxes and paper bags in the weeks leading up to your camping trip. You can use some of the the boxes to carry supplies, of course, but they are also great for starting fires. Laundry lint from your dryer screen also makes great kindling for a fire.
If you have more than three people camping with you, take along more than one tent. You are going to want to have some privacy at one time or another. The additional tent will make it possible to get some "me" time while at the camp site. It also gives you additional storage to keep animals out of your supplies.
Do not approach any wild animals while you are camping. Something that may appear harmless and adorable could be incredibly territorial. Also be sure not to feed any animals, as doing so may lead to injuries. Avoid keeping any food inside of your tent to prevent animals from destroying your campsite. Keep it stored away safely or in a nearby tree.
When camping, never burn your trash or plastic containers in your campfire. These materials can emit toxic fumes that noxious fumes that not only form lots of smoke, but can contaminate food that is prepared over the fire. Instead, keep a trash bag handy, and dispose of it before going in for the night to keep animals from looking for treats!
If you are traveling with children, give them the opportunity to assist you when you get to the campground. They can carry gear, support you as you set up the tent and look for firewood. Not only will it keep them busy and out of trouble, it will be fun for them as well.
Before you leave on your trip, use your backyard to help you work out the kinks in your camping equipment. Put up your tent to make sure you know (or remember!) how to put it up. This will also allow you to see if anything needs to be patched up. It will make it that much easier for you when you get to the campsite.
One thing that many people forget to pack on a camping trip, and which quickly turns the trip into a nightmare is bug spray. This simple repellent will save you both annoyance and can protect your health as many types of bugs can do a great deal of damage to you quickly.

Becky Albright has been on the Orleans/Niagara BOCES Board of Education for 18 years representing the Wilson Central School District.? She was recently elected as the BOCES Board President from June 2012 to June 2013.? You might know her if you watch LCTV as the host of ?Your Public Schools which brings news about local educational topics to about 60,000 viewers.? When asked about being a board member this is what she had to say:?
?Try a little bragging now and again.?
In the beginning I had two children.? When my son and daughter were five and two respectively I adopted 1200 others between the ages of five and twenty-one.? By now it is obvious that I am a school board member. Elected to Wilson Central in 1986 before my son started school and my daughter was out of diapers, I became ?Mom? in a much broader sense of the word!
In 1994 I was elected to Orleans/Niagara BOCES and my brood grew to 37,000 give or take.? I don?t remember their birthdays and they will never get my car keys, but they are mine non-the-less!? I fret over them, I advocate for them, and I brag about them every chance I get.
About this bragging thing, I feel fully entitled to brag, after all aren?t they just the best things ever?? What would we do without them?? Wouldn?t we have wanted folks to brag about us a tiny bit?
There is a distinct difference between advocating and bragging. Advocating is speaking up for public education and? the resources we need,? I do a lot of that when I visit legislators, but bragging is bringing attention to what these kids are actually doing. There might be a more subtle way of saying it than bragging , but broadcasting success is sharing good news with folks that forget there IS good news because they don?t hear it anywhere else.
Frankly speaking I find board work stressful.? Advocacy in this climate is very demanding and frustrating, but when I brag?..I light up. Bragging brings a thrill to these old bones and is exhilarating not to mention energizing.? When I talk about pending legislation and budget woes I get depressed, so who wouldn?t choose thrilled over depressed!
Have you watched the face of a kid when you talk nice to them, when you talk to them as though you think they are special and you are proud of them?? Do you notice how they sit up straighter, maybe even smile a bit?? Have you tried that with parents? Have you tried that with community members? When kids do well everyone puffs up with a sense of accomplishment, that feeling of well-being can easily outweighs tax increases and other troubling events.
So here is brag 101, act like they are your kids.? Remember how you would open your wallet and take out the pics of your kids, well these are your kids, take out some stats and share them!? Ask your superintendent for a ?cheat sheet? of student achievements, graduation percents, student athlete teams, the scholarship monies earned.? Armed with these go public.? When someone asks you ?how are the kids? let them know!
I only recommend what I have done.? I have seen the faces and the reactions when good news spreads not only to the school community but also to the community at large. Give them something to feel good about, brag a little once in awhile.?

Speaking to the press, Mr. Vijay Kulkarni, CEO of the company said, ?a typical centralized train and facilities control system for an underground metro rail transit network in general gathers data from wayside instrumentation for train control and provides supervisory control and data acquisition for managing the various subsystems at the train stations. The term SCADA is used to describe control and management solutions in a variety of industries. SCADA systems collect data from various monitoring and control points. A central computer at that time processes the data, and controls the various subsystems. SCADA systems play a major role in modern industrial enterprises, for instance, public utilities, manufacturing plants, oil and gas stations, and water and electric utilities."
He added, ?Typical SCADA systems consists of: Input and output devices, Remote terminal units, Programming logic controllers, Centralized computers, Communications systems and interfaces, User Interfaces, Standard and/or custom SCADA or HMI software.
The Remote Terminal Unit or the Programming Logic Controller plays a key role in collecting and controlling the subsystems/parts. SCADA systems typically require little or no human intervention, even though they have capabilities built-in for such possibilities for remote monitoring and control. They may utilize long or short distance communications, leased T1/wired/wireless networks, for connectivity depending upon the need and circuit availability.?
Mr. Kulkarni furthermore added, ?One of the main difficulties that many organizations face is integration of several discrete SCADA systems that have been delivered over time. This is because of the SCADA industry's use of proprietary hardware, software and communications protocols. For instance, in a typical metro rail system, centralized train control and traction power management systems may be similar. Conversely, building management systems for intrusion, fire and security could be very different in that they may use different set of protocols and communication standards and practices. As well, Fire Management Systems must follow the rules established by the State's Fire Marshall and/or Authority Having Jurisdiction. They are developed by vendors in different industry groups and may have different types of specialized devices.

Every enthusiastic scientist knows that once you reach a certain level of specialization, there are very few people in your immediate surroundings that actually understand what you say. Eyes of family and friends get a bit glassy when you tell them about the SIR2 homologs, and nobody wants to look at your C. elegans? baby pictures. ?Luckily, this day and age there?s no need to wait until the next conference to talk about your research, because you can blog all about it.
Last post we talked about self-citation in scientific literature. This time, we?re going to talk about self-citation in science blogs, because I?ve done some research about the subject and want to share. I apologize in advance for repeating things known to those who?ve read my previous posts.
Does blog self-citing promote your interests?
Could be. Melissa Terras, who has a blog and over 2,000 Twitter followers noticed that each time she blogged and tweeted about one of her past referee articles (they are freely available in her university repository) the download numbers went up. She decided to try and blog about three articles from the same project, but not blog about a forth. The result: the promoted articles received at least 11 times more downloads than the un-promoted one. However, Terras has a strong Web presence, so this might not work for any blogger.
Now for my research:
The Sample
In our previous research we (Judit Bar-Ilan, Mike Thelwall and I) chose non-commercial blogs with 1-2 authors, which had at least 20 posts in RB. ?This time, we went by RB categories. We chose four RB categories: ?Ecology/Conservation, Computer Science/Engineering, Mathematics and Philosophy. Since the Mathematics category was the smallest, we studied it all (until April 30, 2012), but the other categories were sampled between January 1, 2010 and April 30, 2012. Only bloggers who used their real name and posts which were signed by them became part of the study, for obvious reasons. Figure 1 is an example for a self-citing post. In ResearchBlogging.Org posts can belong to several categories, so sometimes one post, like the one in the figure, was counted several times in the study.

The table shows the number of overall bloggers and self-citers and their percentage in each category. Computer Science/Engineering has the biggest number and the highest percentage of self-citers. The Mathematics category has the lowest number and percentage of self-citers. Only the difference between Computer Science/Engineering and Mathematics was statistically significant (p < 0.05). We had 45 self-citers in absolute numbers.

Education
Most (80%) of the self-citers have a PhD. In peer-reviewed self-citing, more productive and/or older scientists tend to self-cite more, simply because they have more to cite. This seems to apply for blogs as well. The scientist who has been doing research for a decade would have more to cite than the first-year graduate student. 82% of the self-citers were affiliated with a university or a research institute, in comparison with 59% in the previous research. Though I couldn?t get exact data (because some people wrote ?researcher? or ?lecturer? instead of their actual academic rank) I got the impression most self-citers were postdocs. That?s quite a change from last time, where 32% were PhDs, and 27% graduate students.
Woman, cite thyself
When it comes to science blogging, women are still a minority. Our previous research found that only 22% of the blogs were authored or co-authored by women. But the the results were even lower for self-citing. Out of the 45 self-citers, only six were women. Women cited statistically significantly less than men in Ecology and Computer Science. Even when women have science blogs (or write in a group blog) they talk less about their own research and so promote themselves less than men do.
Why do bloggers self-cite?
We know that scientists cite themselves because of a mixture of an honest need to build upon their previous research and the need to self-advertise themselves and their other articles. However, a blogger can blog forever without self-citing. So why do bloggers self-cite?
We still haven?t done a full-scale content analysis (though we might, now that our peer-reviewer recommended it) but here are some nice quotes from the sample:

New York, Illinois, and Texas had the highest number of cities with "take-down sites,? as part of what the federal Drug Enforcement Agency called Operation Log Jam. The DEA said 5 million packets of the drugs were seized from both drug retailers and manufacturing operations, as well as chemicals that could have produced about 14 million more such packets.
?This enforcement action has disrupted the entire illegal industry, from manufacturers to retailers,? DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart said in a statement Thursday.
The crackdown targeted two categories of drugs. One, known as synthetic cannabinoids, includes smokeable substances commonly called ?K2? and ?Spice.? They are typically made up of plant material coated with dangerous psychoactive compounds. Among 12th -graders these are the second most commonly used illicit drug, with 11.4 percent using it, according to a 2011 survey cited by the Office of National Drug Control Policy.?
The other category was synthetic cathinones often known as ?bath salts? which are sold with street names like ?Vanilla Sky? or ?Purple Wave.? They can produce hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, violent behavior, and physical ailments, drug-abuse prevention experts say, and users have also reported extreme paranoia, ?and reduced motor control.
The drugs are popular, especially with teens, because they?ve been promoted heavily online as legal and not harmful, says Mike Townsend, executive vice president of The Partnership for A Drug-Free America. ?But it is very dangerous.?
The crackdown is encouraging and could slow the supply of such drugs, says Mr. Townsend. But ?it?s not a long-term solution?. Supply reduction can?t work by itself. You have to reduce demand too. We have to educate kids and parents.?
According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, the number of calls related to bath salt drugs received by poison control centers across the country spiked from 304 in 2010 to 6,138 in 2011, and then started tapering off in 2012. Nearly 7,000 calls also came in about the synthetic drugs in 2011.
The synthetic drugs can have dramatic effects within just 15 minutes of being ingested or snorted. Townsend?s organization has received calls from frightened mothers who say they have to ?sit on the child?s chest while he?s thrashing about.?
The makers of the drugs took advantage of compounds that were originally developed for medical research, but have never been tested or approved for human consumption, says David Shurtleff, acting deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
?Spice? is more potent than marijuana, Dr. Shurtleff says, and all the synthetic drugs have shown up linked to more emergency room visits. There could be long-term toxic effects as well, he says. ?You?re really gambling with the health of your brain and your body by taking these drugs.?
A law signed this month by President Obama bans more than two dozens substances used in these drugs as Schedule 1 controlled substances, similar to heroin, enabling enhanced prosecution. The DEA is also authorized to treat substances as controlled if they are proven to be chemically similar to banned drugs. Many states have also changed their laws to try to account for the new trend.

1. Find a baseline for your sweat rate.
Weigh yourself before and after an hour run. You will need to drink 20 ? 24oz of liquid for every pound lost. Additionally, you can check your urine?s color. It should be pale but not colorless. If it is too dark, you need to hydrate more. If it is colorless, you may be over-hydrating.
2. Drink before, during and after your exercise.
If you get behind with your hydration, it is better to slow down and drink than to skip it entirely.

4. Experiment and practice your hydration plan.
Don?t wait until race day to try your hydration plan ? experiment and practice during your training. Keep a log of what works for you to determine your best race day fluid replacement strategy.
5. Drink small amounts at one time, but drink often.

6. Avoid commercial soft drinks.
Avoid empty calories and choose an electrolyte sports drink instead.
7. Watch your alcohol and caffeine intake.

If you are an early morning runner, keep a glass of water by your bedside and hydrate throughout the night.
9. Give your bladder a break.
Stop drinking one hour before a race to give your bladder a break and help settle your stomach.
10. Stick to what you know.
In the days leading up to a race, do not experiment with food or drink. Keep to what you know and have been training with to avoid any surprises on race day.
