PSIO prototype loads PlayStation 1 ISOs on the console, no burned CD necessary (video)

PSIO prototype brings PS1 backups to the console, no burned CDs

Project PlayStation Input Output has been trying to load PlayStation 1 game images through the game system's parallel I/O port since 2010, and now it's ready to show off the first prototype. If piracy is your aim, then modchips that let users play burned discs and emulators that have been available through the console's 19-year history should suffice, but this project aims to bypass those methods. The potential benefits include easier homebrew support and playing of ripped discs on the original hardware without worrying about wearing out an aging console's laser. Eventually the team wants to load games and saves from an SD card, but in this demo video it's playing Klonoa: Door to Phantomile from an attached PC. As seen in the nearly ten minute video it does work, albeit slowly. As the video notes, optimizations for the USB controller and CD sectors that should speed things up have not been implemented yet. According to its FAQ, the PSIO team aims to have a final version done this year, you can check out the fruits of their labor after the break.

3-D modeling technology offers groundbreaking solution for engineers

May 16, 2013 ? Software developed at the University of Sheffield has the potential to enable engineers to make 'real world' safety assessments of structures and foundations with unprecedented ease.

Developed in the Department of Civil & Structural Engineering, the software can directly identify three-dimensional collapse mechanisms and provide information about margin of safety, vitally important to engineers.

A method of directly identifying two-dimensional collapse mechanisms was first developed in the Department in 2007, and commercialised through the spinout company LimitState Ltd. This method, for the first time, fully automated the hand calculation techniques that had been relied upon by engineers for decades. Software incorporating this method is now used in dozens of countries worldwide.

Now, in a study published by the Royal Society, the researchers have shown that the same basic approach can be applied to 3D problems, ensuring that real world features can be taken into account.

Professor Matthew Gilbert, who co-authored the study, says: "The software we have developed means that engineers should in future be able to model real world geometries much more easily than before, obviating the need to idealise a complex 3D problem as a much simpler 2D problem. This should lead to more reliable assessment of margin safety and, ultimately, save companies time and money on projects."

Google Wallet will soon let you send payments as a Gmail attachment

Sending money with Google Wallet wasn't a tremendously difficult affair before today, but Mountain View's now discovered a clever new way to part you from your cash. "Over the coming months," the company will roll out a new payments feature within Gmail, letting you attach money just as you would an image or document. After clicking the new "$" symbol within the composer, you'll type in an amount and select the source of your funds. Then hit Attach, click send, and say goodbye to your Greenbacks. It's that simple. You can probably get a solid feel for how this works just from looking at the image above, but given the onslaught of announcements today, we'll forgive you for needing a more comprehensive explanation. Goog's got your back, too -- there's a demo video waiting just past the break.

H1N1 discovered in marine mammals

May 15, 2013 ? Scientists at the University of California, Davis, detected the H1N1 (2009) virus in free-ranging northern elephant seals off the central California coast a year after the human pandemic began, according to a study published today, May 15, in the journal PLOS ONE. It is the first report of that flu strain in any marine mammal.

"We thought we might find influenza viruses, which have been found before in marine mammals, but we did not expect to find pandemic H1N1," said lead author Tracey Goldstein, an associate professor with the UC Davis One Health Institute and Wildlife Health Center. "This shows influenza viruses can move among species."

UC Davis researchers have been studying flu viruses in wild birds and mammals since 2007 as part of the Centers of Excellence in Influenza Research and Surveillance program funded by National Institutes of Health. The goal of this research is to understand how viruses emerge and move among animals and people.

Between 2009 and 2011, the team of scientists tested nasal swabs from more than 900 marine mammals from 10 different species off the Pacific Coast from Alaska to California. They detected H1N1 infection in two northern elephant seals and antibodies to the virus in an additional 28 elephant seals, indicating more widespread exposure.

Neither infected seal appeared to be ill, indicating marine mammals may be infected without showing clinical signs of illness.

The findings are particularly pertinent to people who handle marine mammals, such as veterinarians and animal rescue and rehabilitation workers, Goldstein said. They are also a reminder of the importance of wearing personal protective gear when working around marine mammals, both to prevent workers' exposure to diseases, as well as to prevent the transmission of human diseases to animals.

H1N1 originated in pigs. It emerged in humans in 2009, spreading worldwide as a pandemic. The World Health Organization now considers the H1N1 strain from 2009 to be under control, taking on the behavior of a seasonal virus.

"H1N1 was circulating in humans in 2009," said Goldstein. "The seals on land in early 2010 tested negative before they went to sea, but when they returned from sea in spring 2010, they tested positive. So the question is where did it come from?"

When elephant seals are at sea, they spend most of their time foraging in the northeast Pacific Ocean off the continental shelf, which makes direct contact with humans unlikely, the report said.

The seals had been satellite tagged and tracked, so the researchers knew exactly where they had been and when they arrived on the coast. The first seal traveled from California on Feb. 11 to southeast Alaska to forage off the continental shelf, returning to Point Piedras Blancas near San Simeon, Calif., on April 24. The second seal left Ano Nuevo State Reserve in San Mateo County, Calif., on Feb. 8, traveling to the northeast Pacific and returning on May 5. Infections in both seals were detected within days of their return to land. The report said exposure likely occurred in the seals before they reached land, either while at sea or upon entering the near-shore environment.

The research, led by scientists Goldstein and Walter Boyce at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine's One Health Institute, was conducted with collaborators Nacho Mena and Adolfo Garc?a-Sastre at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, who sequenced the virus isolates and characterized their phenotypic properties.

"The study of influenza virus infections in unusual hosts, such as elephant seals, is likely to provide us with clues to understand the ability of influenza virus to jump from one host to another and initiate pandemics," said Garc?a-Sastre, professor of microbiology and director of the Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine.

The research was funded primarily through the Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance, a program supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, and the Tagging of Pacific Predators program, a project of the Census of Marine Life.

Wonderful Tips To Achieve Success With Online Marketing ? Hot ...

Internet marketing can be a lot of work and there are so many ways that someone can either, improve upon the program or change the program entirely. So whether you need more techniques to help promote your site or if you?re looking for a new program to promote your site, take a look at the tips below.

Increasing your productivity in web marketing is about mindset just as much as it is about action. So in order to make sure you have the proper mindset, you should always wait until you experience results before increasing your campaign. Results will give you the confidence to grow and the drive to follow through.

Although it?s a bad idea for an affiliate to act as if they?re totally in love with a product, since it turns the potential customer off, it is still wise to link to the company?s pre-sell product pitch. As long as you have read the pitch and find it to be tasteful, authoritative and relevant, you should send your traffic there.

When you are marketing supplements, make sure that you understand the difference between supplements that are designed to address and illness and those designed for general health. When selling general health supplements, your market is going to be health nuts and body builders, while illness-related supplements are probably going to have a smaller market of people with that illness.

Web marketing need not be your website?s sole revenue stream. The same site that generates affiliate money can also use other advertisement strategies, like Google adSense. In order to maximize effectiveness, though, it is best to keep some separation between your advertisers. Avoid working with two advertisers offering similar products to prevent them from cannibalizing potential customers off of each other.

Make your site helpful to your readers. Don?t make affiliate products the ?meat? of your site; provide useful content and good information, then add affiliate products that complement the information you are providing. Instead of just listing a bunch of links for books you want people to buy, write an actual review of each book. This adds value for your readers and for doing the work, you deserve something in return.

Add content that your readers want along with your affiliate links. If you provide reasons for your audience to click on your links, you will find much better success. If you just type a list of baby items you like with links, you?ll receive much less response than if you type reviews and why you loved these items.

Try to only check your email two times a day so that you?ll be completely focused on your work instead. You can even set your email program to only pick up email every 12 hours to ensure you?re not peeking when you should actually be writing content, creating graphics, or reading more about your web marketing programs.

Any affiliate company you choose to work with should offer you a wide range of materials to use. It is in a company?s best interest to help its affiliates generate traffic so that everyone can profit. So if a company is not offering resources for you, you should realize that this company is not worth working for.

If you are a vendor you need to keep the following in mind. Just as you would respond to e-mails and phone calls from customers, you must also quickly respond to questions and concerns from your affiliates. Responding to affiliates is a critical part of enabling their success, which in turn brings you success. Poor communication will drive away quality affiliates who would have brought in high sales numbers. As the number of affiliates you have starts to grow, keep in mind that you may need to hire and train support staff that deal specifically with affiliate inquiries. If you are an affiliate, don?t waste your time with vendors who don?t take your communications seriously.

When setting up your site for affiliate marketing, make sure that your layout goes with the products that you have available. You will want to portray a certain image and it is important for your layout to help you do this. Your audience may become confused if you have a site that has nothing to do with the products you are showing.

As was mentioned before in the article, affiliate programs can be a very nice source of income. However, if you?re lazy and uninterested in making your site attractive to your audience, your site will surely fail. You need to put in your time and effort if you want to see any rewards.

78,000 to live on Mars: Have you signed up?

78,000 people have applied to live on Mars. Up to 3,000 will make the first cut, and the 28-40 finalists will spend seven years training before 4 finally get selected for a one-way trip to live on Mars.

By Mike Wall,?Space.com / May 9, 2013

An artist drew this future portrait of Mars One astronauts and their colony on the Red Planet. 78,000 have already signed up to live on Mars, but Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp expects applications to keep pouring in: he's hoping half a million people will sign up for a one-way ticket to Mars.

About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced today (May 7). Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.

"With 78,000 applications in two weeks, this is turning out to be the most desired job in history," Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp?said in a statement. "These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants."?

Mars One estimates that landing four settlers on Mars in 2023 will cost about $6 billion. The Netherlands-based organization plans to pay most of the bills by staging a global reality-TV event, with cameras documenting all phases of the mission from astronaut selection to the colonists' first years on the Red Planet.

The application process extends until Aug. 31. Anyone at least 18 years of age can apply, by submitting to the Mars One website a 1-minute video explaining his or her motivation to become a Red Planet settler. (You can also watch other applicants' videos at the site.)

Mars One charges an application fee, which ranges from $5 to $75 depending on the wealth of the applicant's home country. United States citizens pay $38, Lansdorp said.

When the application process closes, reviewers will pick 50 to 100 candidates from each of the 300 regions around the world that Mars One has identified. By 2015, this pool will be whittled down to a total of 28 to 40 candidates, officials said.

This core group will be split into groups of four, which will train for their one-way Mars mission for about seven years. Finally, an audience vote will pick one of these groups to be humanity's first visitors to the Red Planet.

So far, Mars One has received applications from more than 120 countries, officials said. The United States leads the way with 17,324, followed by China (10,241) and the United Kingdom (3,581). Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Argentina and India round out the top 10.

Philippine police: ex-Marine, murder weapon linked

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? More than 20 months after the bodies of a retired Northern Ireland police officer and his girlfriend were found in a Philippines bedroom littered with bullet casings, authorities seeking the extradition of a former U.S. Marine say they have linked him to guns used in the killings and recovered blood-splattered jeans he tried to have burned.

Timothy Kaufman, 35, was arrested last month near his grandfather's upstate New York home. He faces extradition proceedings in a federal court in Albany to answer to murder charges in the Philippines. A date for the extradition proceedings has not yet been set.

Philippine authorities seeking his return allege a premeditated killing in an area known for its sometimes-seamy club scene ? a picture at odds with the dedicated former military intelligence specialist described by his grandfather.

"He's a very fine person. He's a former United States Marine. He fought for his country," said his grandfather, Sidney Kaufman.

David Balmer, 54, and 26-year-old Elma de Guia were found dead on Sept. 2, 2011, in a bedroom in the Angeles City home of Richard Agnew, a club owner and friend of Balmer's dating to when they joined Northern Ireland's Royal Ulster Constabulary in the late 1970s. Eighteen spent 9 mm shells were recovered from the scene.

"David was a retired police officer and a very quiet man, not the sort of person to have a problem with anyone," Agnew said in an email to The Associated Press.

Within three months of the killing, Kaufman and two other men were charged with two counts of murder.

Kaufman was identified by watchmen and by surveillance footage as one of three men in a vehicle that entered the residential subdivision the night of the killings. Also charged are Joseph Tramontano, an American, and Jesus Santos Jr., a Filipino, who police say was the driver.

Santos was arrested in March. Tramontano, a former professional wrestler who managed a bar operated by Agnew, is believed to be at large in Asia, said Nolly Bautista, an agent with the Philippines National Bureau of Investigation.

Court papers filed in Kaufman's extradition case allege that after the killings, he asked his maid to burn the contents of a garbage bag that contained shoes and clothes worn by Kaufman and Tramontano. In a separate incident, Kaufman asked the maid, "Can you bury something for me?" and handed her two guns wrapped in a bath towel, the papers say.

The maid turned the guns over to the police, who determined they were used in the killings. Bautista said the recovered jeans had tiny blood splatters.

Police were investigating a motive, though Bautista said recently they were "looking at the drug angle." He said the two American suspects had been using cocaine and crystal methamphetamine.

According to statements Santos made to police, Kaufman told him before the killings that the house belonged to someone who owed money to two of his friends, one of them named Joe. Santos also recounted how Tramontano described how Balmer begged for his life and he responded, "No, this is for my money, and this is for my girl.'"

Agnew told investigators that when he returned home from his bar, he found the door to his house had been forced open. Agnew did not think much of it because it had happened before when Balmer lost his keys. He said when he woke up the next day, he noticed that Balmer and his girlfriend were still in their bedroom. He knocked, opened the door and saw the two lying in bed. When he came closer, he saw they had been shot.

The agent said the two may have been awake when they were shot because Balmer had a bullet wound on one of his hands, indicating he tried to shield himself. He said the killers then arranged the bodies and the bed sheets to make them look like the victims had been asleep.

"I was devastated, as was David's family in Ireland," Agnew told the AP. "Perhaps now with these arrests, there shall be a justice for what happened."

Kaufman left the Philippines a month after the killings, according to authorities. He was arrested in April at a Saratoga Springs-area business, nearby where he had been staying with his grandfather.

Sidney Kaufman said his grandson was being framed.

"I can tell you this, he's not guilty," he said.

Federal prosecutors had intended to argue in court Thursday for Kaufman's continued detention as the extradition process plays out, but Kaufman's lawyer waived the scheduled hearing. Attorney Mark Sacco told the court in a letter that he could request a detention hearing later, if need be, as his investigation continues.

Kaufman, who grew up in Tennessee, worked security and intelligence for contractors as a civilian in Iraq after he left the military, according to his grandfather. A bulletin posted on the Web by Philippine authorities included an ID card that indicated that in 2011 Kaufman worked as an inventory controller at a manufacturer for mobile phone cases in the Philippines.

Editor's desk: Escape from New York!

Editor's desk: Escape from New York

I did it, I escaped from New York! After spending three of the last four weeks at the temporary Mobile Nations HQ in NYC, trying my best to get all the #TM13 prep work done, as well as keeping up with the daily iMore grind of news, views, and podcasts. Luckily, in addition to our already rock-solid (and rock-star!) cast, we had Peter Cohen join us full-time last week, and Richard Devine starts full-time this week. The timing couldn't be any better, because, frankly, it's going to be one hell of a summer.

Next Sunday I'm off again, this time to Orlando to help Kevin Michaluk and crew produce CrackBerry Live from the show floor of BlackBerry Live. Yeah, only Nixon could go to China...

After that, I'll be back for a couple of weeks, and then I'll be returning briefly to New York City and then on to WWDC 2013, which should give all of us our first look at iOS 7 and OS X 10.9.

In the mean time, here're the bullet points:

 • This whole "Tim Cook should be fired" meme is the dumbest Apple thing I've seen in the long history of dumb Apple things. I don't care who you are, what degree you have, or who pays your salary, if you're writing "Tim Cook should be fired" you're either stupid, corrupt, or stupidly corrupt, and you should be fired by any editor with any ounce of self-respect left. Sadly, that's fewer and farther between these days. Makes me wonder who's agenda those articles are really servicing?

 • I shot a lot with my DSLR over the last couple of weeks, and every time I lament the lack of cellular wireless and all the terrific processing and sharing apps I have on my iPhone. There's a Galaxy Camera, of course, which is basically a lens grafted to a Galaxy S3, but that's Android. I don't see Apple licensing out iOS any time soon-as-in-ever, or iPhone cameras getting support for discreet lenses, or any rumors of an iCamera any time soon, but damn if I don't want one. Questions is, would it have any mainstream appeal?

 • I saw Google Glass a few times over the last week. I even experienced being filmed by it. It was as awkward watching it as I presume people feel wearing it, but every new thing is awkward at first. I don't know if the future is filled with visors for everyone, but I do like the promise of wearable technology. I'd be delighted to try Google Glass, but I'm not sure I'd be delighted by Google Glass, at least not yet. I'm not sure Google's nailed the implementation -- this could be more Lisa than Mac, more Treo than iPhone -- but that's why early days are early. Imagine a better looking, more mainstream version made by, dare I say it, a company we can better trust?

 • Iron Man 3 was good. I liked it more than I thought I would. The humor I feared gone was plentiful, the set pieces outstanding, and while a couple of the choices were potentially off-putting enough that I'm still undecided on them, overall Shane Black delivered in Lethal Weapon-like fashion. Now all they need to do is sign Downey Jr. for Avengers 2 and Iron Man 4...

House party's over. Time to clean the slate!

Google Play comes to Barnes & Noble's Nook HD and HD+, we go hands-on (video)

Image

Barnes & Noble's refusal to open its ecosystem has long been one of our principle complaints about the company's tablet offerings. The Nook HD and HD+ are extremely nice pieces of hardware that have been held back by their own walled software offerings -- having a fast device with a nice screen only gets you so far without the proper apps. The company line up to now has been that walling off content allows for a sort of quality control, assuring that apps are developed specifically for the unique form factor of its devices. And while there's perhaps something to be said for that sentiment in the sometimes-fragmented world of Android devices, it was hard to ignore the fact that offering up exclusive access to content through your own marketplace assures better cash flow. It also, unfortunately, means that without extensive developer outreach, there are sure to be plenty of popular apps that just never make it over to your side of the fence.

With its announcement tonight, B&N acknowledges that, in this case, open is better. The company has responded directly to user feedback and will be issuing a software update to its Nook HD and Nook HD+ devices (sorry Nook Tablet and Color owners) that brings Google Play directly to the desktop. The software will come pre-loaded on new devices and will be available as an over-the-air update. If you can't wait that long, you'll also be able to download it directly from the bookseller's site. The update also brings a few other tweaks to the system, but this is far and away the biggest news. The first question we asked upon getting a quick demo: will you be able to buy content like books, magazines and movies through Play? Yep, that's coming too.

Turkey: Legal reforms fall short on freedom of expression | Amnesty ...

The conviction this month of Faz?l Say, a Turkish pianist for ?insulting religious values? is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how the Turkish authorities could implement a new reform package that has the potential to limit freedom of expression, Amnesty International said.

The ?Fourth judicial package? ? a reform bill confirmed yesterday by Turkey?s President and passed into law today, fails to meet the government?s stated aim of bringing Turkish laws into line with international human rights standards, including European Court of Human Rights case law on the right to freedom of expression.

?This legal reform will go down in the history books as yet another missed opportunity for the government to deliver genuine human rights reform,? said John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International?s Europe and Central Asia Director.

?It is a small step in the right direction, but still a long way short of Turkey?s international human rights obligations as well as what the people of Turkey demand from their lawmakers.?

Amnesty International believes the reform package will allow abusive prosecutions to continue, forcing still more political activists, journalists and human rights defenders to face jail sentences for carrying out their work.

Urgent steps needed

The organization calls for the government to abolish the provision on ?insulting religious values?, used against the pianist Fazil Say, who was given a 10-month suspended prison sentence for what were deemed offensive comments on Twitter. Amnesty also wants the abolition of Penal Code Article 301 on ?denigration of the Turkish nation? and Article 125 on criminal defamation. None of the three were included in the government?s recent reform package.

?Yesterday?s conviction of pianist Fazil Say for ?insulting religious values? demonstrates the need for Turkey?s outdated and restrictive laws to be changed,? Dalhuisen added.

?It is not enough for the government to state that the reform process is ongoing, urgent steps must be taken now.?

Open to abuse

Amnesty International notes that several other Penal Code articles amended under the reform package could still be open to abuse, leading to further violations of the right to freedom of expression.

These include Article 215 on ?praising a crime or a criminal? and Article 318 on ?alienating the public from military service? ? both of which the organization wants to see abolished.

The reform package also amends Anti-Terrorism Law articles 6/2 on ?printing or publishing of declarations or statements of terrorist organizations? and 7/2 on ?making propaganda for a terrorist organization?. Under the reforms, only statements constituting coercion, violence or threats are subject to prosecution under these provisions ? but while the proposed amendments do narrow the offences, and may therefore prevent some of the abuses seen in the past, the amendment is still too broad in that it includes the vague concepts of coercion and threat without specifying a link to violence.

According to international standards, only people making statements that amount to making propaganda for war or any other sort of advocacy of violence should be prosecuted.

Amnesty International calls on the Turkish authorities to amend Article 7/2 in line with these international standards and to scrap Article 6/2 which does not provide for any legitimate prosecution outside what is provided for in Article 7/2.?

Amendments also prevent the use of these articles and some offences under the Law on Demonstrations to be used in conjunction with Article 220/6 of the Penal Code ?Committing a crime in the name of a terrorist organization? that allows persons to be punished as if they were a member of a terrorist organization.
?
This amendment is welcome in that it should prevent some of the abusive prosecutions for ?Committing a crime in the name of a terrorist organization? which have included individuals being prosecuted and convicted for legitimate expressions dissenting opinions in particularly in relation to Kurdish rights and politics through speeches, participation at demonstrations and association with certain recognised political groups and organizations.

However, it does not address the broader problem of similar prosecutions being brought for ?membership of a terrorist organization? under Article 314 of the Penal Code or other related provisions.

Amnesty International calls on the Turkish authorities to abolish the offence of ?Committing a crime in the name of a terrorist organization? and to address the broader abuses seen under anti-terrorism prosecutions by amending the overly broad and vague definition of terrorism in line with international standards.

?Turkey has a history of broad and vague laws which have been applied in violation of the right to freedom of expression. Turkey?s lawmakers should have put an end to this,? said Andrew Gardner, Amnesty International?s researcher on Turkey.

?This reform bill afforded the Turkish authorities an opportunity to end the prosecution of individuals for membership of a terrorist organization based simply on the fact that they had written a book, or given a lecture, allegedly supporting the aims of a terrorist organization. Should we now understand that the government wants such abusive prosecutions to continue?? said Gardner.

?Ending the abusive and unfair prosecutions under anti-terrorism laws is essential to achieve peace and justice in Turkey.?

ANN ARBORCancer cells are wily, well-traveled adversaries, constantly side-stepping treatments to stop their spread. But for the first time, scientists at the University of Michigan have decoded the molecular chatter that ramps certain cancer cells into overdrive and can cause tumors to metastasize throughout the body.

Researchers have long known that tumors recruit healing cells, which is a major reason why cancer is so difficult to thwart. This is the first known study to explain the molecular behavior behind the series of changes that happen in the healing cells that result in metastasis.

Russell Taichman, a professor at the U-M School of Dentistry and research associate Younghun Jung looked at prostate and breast tumors. Their study, "Recruitment of mesenchymal stem cells into prostate tumors promotes metastasis," appears April 30 in the online journal Nature Communications.

Consider that a tumor is a wound that won't heal. To that end, both cancerous and benign tumors emit distress signals and messages to recruit healing-type cells, called mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs, Taichman said.

"Now we know what messages (tumors) send to recruit and alter those healing cells, and we can take steps to block those messages," said Taichman, the study's principal investigator.

With this information, researchers can now try to develop drugs to pharmaceutically derail tumor formation earlier. This is especially important because this particular molecular signaling involves reactions among proteins that actually make cancer cells more migratory, more aggressive and more likely to spread.

To that end, Taichman said he was surprised at the large role played by the protein CXCL16 in altering the healing type cells in such a way that they revved the cancer cells into overdrive.

"Think of giving a bunch of kids sugar, and they all go nuts," he said.

On a personal level, the way the results emerged also delighted Taichman. Half of the researchers in Taichman's lab work on tumor development and half on wound healing. The research of Jung, the first author on the study, straddles both.

"It was her idea to put these together," Taichman said. "She sorted it all out, came up with the idea and finally came to me."
